New York
Takuma Watanabe earned a devout following helming the bar programme at New York City’s legendary Angel’s Share. After the beloved speakeasy closed, Wantanabe opened Martiny’s, an homage to the drinking cultures of his Tokyo birthplace as well as his Manhattan home. Occupying a carriage house in Gramercy, once owned by artist Philip Martiny, the three-storey lounge is a temple to luxury.
Omotenashi, the Japanese concept of hospitality, drives the experience. Guests are greeted with a warm oshibori towel and perfectly mixed drinks arrive in Kimura crystal. Martiny’s eight step menu is hierarchised into suggested courses, akin to an omakase menu. The emphasis is on variations of Golden Age classics kicked up with premium spirits and immaculate presentation like Grand Martiny’s balance of gin, sherry, porto, cognac, and elderflower liqueur. Chef Wayne Cheng, a veteran of Masa and Eleven Madison Park, creates culinary gems worthy of the cocktails. The offerings are light, but immaculate. Chicken karaage is crowned with a mound of caviar. Whether snacking or sipping, Martiny’s delivers an opulent experience.
After making its debut in the 2023 edition of North America's 50 Best Bars, Martiny's swift rise to stardom has seen it jump 25 places in the ranking, earning itself the Nikka Highest Climber Award 2024 in the process.
