San Miguel de Allende
Set on the terrace of a colonial building with one of the best views of San Miguel de Allende’s downtown district, Bekeb is at the forefront of this city’s wave of innovative new cocktail bars. Named after the Tzotzil culture’s word “bek,” meaning “seed”, owner and director Fabiola Padilla (former bartender of Enrique Olvera’s Cosme at New York) designs drinks that utilise Mexican fruits, plants, flowers, seeds, roots and traditional elixirs. Each of the cocktails featured on Bekeb’s menu focus on one pre-Hispanic natural ingredient: Garambullo (a native acid berry from Guanajuato), Guayaba, or Aguamiel are just a few examples of the bar’s philosophy of reconnecting with everyday life celebrations and rituals through a singular element.
Alongside the natural ingredients of Mexico, the menu also uses Mexican spirits at the base of each of its cocktails. As a Jalisco native, Padilla loves working with agave distillates. Try Tepache, a fermented, pineapple-based ancient drink that been revisited with a mix of spices, piloncillo and a base of raicilla, a wild agave distillate from the coast of Jalisco. Bekeb is the spot for locals and visitors who really want to learn more about Mexico and its hidden treasures, all whilst having a lovely evening spent soaking up the setting sun on the bar’s rooftop.
