Bar Copains
Sydney, Australia
Meaning ‘friends’ in French, this convivial neighbourhood wine bar and restaurant in Surry Hills is the epitome of cool, owned and run by long-term friends and chefs Morgan McGlone and Nathan Sasi (all tattooed arms, hipster hats and black tees). While there’s a focus on the natural wine on offer and display – much of which has been donated by the friends from their personal collections – food is by no means the sideshow. Small plates like pigs’ head fritti, Abrolhos Island scallop, fried chickpea panisse, raw diced tuna and barbecue beef tongue all mean serious business on the ever-changing menu, while larger offerings such as Murray cod and barbecue O’Connor Scotch fillet mean snacks can easily turn into dinner (just how the boys designed it). Inside, the joint is cosy and intimate, with green banquette seating, wooden tables and a sit-at bar, all accompanied by a banging hip-hop soundtrack.
