Lilia

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Blink and you might miss this very low-key and unassuming colonial-style townhouse in Rio's downtown Lapa district. But once you find it, up a flight of stairs, you’ll be met with some of the finest flavours in the city. Meet Lilia: the project of two cousins, Lucio Vieira and Mateus Siqueira, who wanted a place to honour their grandmother, the namesake. It’s casually cool and stripped back with exposed bricks, hanging bulb lights and beautiful tiled floors. As for the food, it changes daily depending on what’s grown seasonally and available, but there's a real focus on grilled meats and seafood. Chef Yan Ramos's creativity is also evident in the vegetarian options, which dish up lively concoctions such as grilled mushrooms with roasted cauliflower cream, Brazilian nuts, chimichurri and chickpeas. Let the attentive staff guide you, but if the chocolate ganache pudding with cupuaçu caramel comes up, don't hesitate, and plump for a glass (or two) of the menu's exciting natural and organic wines.
