Union at The Opposite House

There’s an effortless cool to this sumptuous cocktail bar set on the ground floor of Beijing’s luxury hotel The Opposite House, with its high ceilings and beautiful, minimalist design by New York’s AvroKO. Upmarket but not showy, Union makes excellent use of wood and metal, naturally lit through large windows, and by some notable chandeliers. It’s a satisfyingly sophisticated, comfortable setting for the compelling cocktails produced by the bar team, with a menu inspired by the Silk Road. Over the course of 12 experimental drinks, guests encounter exotic ingredients and a convergence of cultures, with each signature cocktail inspired by a particular place along the road. Mongolia’s Genghis Khan Martini, for example, pushes the boundaries with French gin, Mongolian milk wine, dry vermouth, elderflower, coconut and sea salt.
