The Diplomat has been stirring things up across Asia since its early 2020 launch, coming in hot as The London Essence Best New Opening 2021 and taking the No.20 spot in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2021. And it’s little wonder. Curving a corner in a moody Central alley, with a letterbox-slip for window and a gilded back bar with warm yellow lighting, it’s like a scene from Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks made modern for the Instagram generation. Behind it is John Nugent, a native of Seattle; the preface is simple – great cocktails combined with great food and superlative hospitality. But that doesn’t do it justice. Blurring the epicurean lines between craft cocktail bar and restaurant, The Diplomat stands alone. Dinky minis (Gibsons, Tuxedos et al.) lead alongside elevated punches and clever riffs on the classics on the cocktail front; add their excellent Wagyu burger to the mix, sit back and soak up the spirit of this exciting new haunt.
