Villa La Coste
Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France
Natural beauty and man-made art compete for attention at this remote Aix-En-Provence hotel. Attached to the 600-arce Château La Coste contemporary arts and wine estate, the 28-suite, mountain-surrounded stay packs a gallery’s worthy of modern art into its striking, contemporary architecture. At Villa La Coste, even the standard rooms have terraces and Tracey Emins. Irish real-estate tycoon Patrick McKillen is behind the rural escape; after buying a local vineyard, McKillen and his team built and furnished a design-centric hotel in which no light-lit corner has been ignored, and no mid-century chair vaguely placed. Artworks hail from the late and great of the modern scene; spot pieces by Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Paul Matisse and more. The clientele is similarly starry, with visits from famous filmmakers, musicians and artists. A fresh-faced team keeps the hotel service efficient but friendly both in the hotel and at the various dining destinations on site. The estate’s Restaurant Francis Mallmann grill is the obvious highlight, but the most recent opening, a Hélène Darroze dining space, is also making waves. Wine from the state-of-the-art vineyard offers a taste of the terrain beneath your feet. There’s also a Japanese-style spa and outdoor pool.
