Shree Thaker Bhojanalay
Mumbai, India
Founded in 1945 down a crowded lane in old Mumbai, Shree Thaker Bhojanalay has evolved over time – the large, first-floor hall is now separated into small rooms and air conditioning has been installed – but what hasn’t changed in over 75 years is the quality of the Gujarati food, all of it vegetarian and served up with the charm that comes from the restaurant still being family-owned. Huge steel thali plates are the name of the game, bearing dinky little pots of chutneys, dal, farsan, curries and samosas to be scooped up with roti, puri and bhakri. Expect to queue at the weekend, which is no surprise given the excellent value for money. Go on an empty stomach – portions are huge.
