Buahan A Banyan Tree Escape
Payangan, Kabupaten Gianyar, Indonesia
In Bali, the closer you are to the jungle, the more decadent the stay – so Buahan’s 'no walls, no doors' ethos is a sign of the hotel’s out-and-out opulence. All that separates snoozing guests from the rambunctious chorus of tropical night prowlers is a gauzy curtain. The 16 plunge-pool equipped villas, made from reclaimed ironwood, are scatted through a deep green sea of jungle foliage, blurring the boundaries between what’s outside and what’s in. These high-eaved wooden buildings really don’t have any walls: bamboo shades and hazy drapes provide privacy (and rain protection). When the hammered-copper bath tubs gaze into the trees. Opened in 2022 in a remote corner of Ubud, this jungle-swallowed stay is the rustic new kid in the Banyan Tree Escape’s previously contemporary portfolio. Sustainability sits at the heart of the project: villas blend aesthetically into the jungle, but also leave only a ghostly footprint when considering their environmental impact. Elsewhere, Balinese culture takes the limelight. Feast on hyper-local fare at chef Eka Sunarya’s The Open Kitchen, enjoy locally inspired treatments like pijat massages and candle nut scrubs at the Toja Spa, and join tours of local farms with food producers in the nearest village.
