Palazzo Durazzo Suites

Genoa, Italy

Spending the night in a centuries-old Italian palazzo is rare enough, but staying in one still owned by the same family? Sign us up. The 17th-century Palazzo Durazzo Suites, reborn after a seven-year restoration led by Giacomo Cattaneo Adorno, his architect wife Emanuela Brignone Cattaneo and artistic director Cesare Barro offers a blend of old-world grandeur with modern flair in 12 uniquely styled suites. Il Doge dazzles with frescoed ceilings edged in gold, while The Four Seasons has its own gilded chapel. Other rooms are more muted: La Cupola’s stark white minimalism is a complete step change, while Le Conchiglie wows with a pastel shell ceiling evoking nearby grottos. The double-height lounge bursts with bold red and pink sofas and glossy black tables. The golden frescoed breakfast room offers a calmer contrast, but wherever guests stay, there's no doubt about one thing – the view over Genoa’s medieval harbour is unforgettable.
