Borgo Egnazia
Savelletri, Italy
- No.21 The World's 50 Best Hotels 2023
Don’t be fooled by first appearances at this hotel. What might appear to be a small collection of little Italian hamlets is actually the complex of one of Italy’s finest hotels. Borgo Egnazia was built from scratch and opened its doors for the first time in 2010, but you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise, thanks to its bell-towered church, central piazza and surrounding fortifications. Step into the hotel, however, and the telltale signs that this is a contemporary luxe hospitality experience are readily apparent. Four pools, a Roman-inspired thermal bath, spa and a multitude of al fresco bars and restaurants: this is a state-of-the-art hospitality complex built to measure. Accommodation within the hotel ranges from ‘Casette’ stone cottages and 28 luxurious villas to romantic, minimalist rooms located inside the main La Corte building, each sporting lavender-scented contemporary interiors of clean lines and slick stone. At night, the limestone buildings and piazza come to life under the warming glow of candlelight. A spot of dinner at Due Camini, the hotel’s flagship Italian restaurant, is as magical as one can hope for. Guests also have access to two private beaches – one sandy and one shingled – via a shuttle service from the main hotel.
