Among those Japanese bars flying the flag for top-end cocktails outside Tokyo is Ark Lounge, located in Hachinohe, on the coast of Honshu Island. Having now been around for more than ten years, and having become a regular in Asia's 50 Best Bars 51-100 list – placing No.67 in 2022 – Ark makes its cocktails with haute couture in mind, resulting in elegant, beautifully presented drinks that are just as satisfying to taste as they are to look at. The bar’s Jyawamegu, for example, a combination of Denshu sake, sherry, elderflower bitters and yuzu, is a work of art, served on a raised pedestal. The cosy interior, set over multiple floors, is the ideal setting to explore this elevated cocktail offering.
