Azumi Setoda

Onomichi, Japan

This intimate hotel on Ikuchijima island began 140 years ago as the home of an influential salt merchant. Conceived by Aman founder Adrian Zecha, today, it reimagines Japanese minimalism with a contemporary touch. Once a key Silk Road hub for ceramics and spices, the property showcases exquisite craftsmanship throughout. The soothing guest rooms are all clean lines and traditional materials such as cedar, cypress, washi, and granite, each with its own Zen-inspired outdoor space – whether a balcony, serene garden, or a blend of both – enclosed by traditional Japanese fencing for privacy. Dining is an ode to the Horiuchi family heritage, with French-inspired dishes served on heirloom tableware passed down through generations. Chef Kenya Akita keeps it local, using ingredients sourced within a 50-kilometre radius of the Setouchi region. Just steps away, Azumi’s public bathhouse welcomes guests and locals alike, while beyond the property, explore scenic cycling trails, cast a line for fresh fish, or visit the island’s famed lemon farm for a taste of Setouchi’s produce.
