Palace Hotel Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Palace Hotel Tokyo is an oasis of calm amidst the gleaming glass edifices of Japan’s Marunouchi commercial district. This has much to do with the fact that the hotel is next to the Imperial Palace gardens – a setting that is intertwined in its architectural design. Step inside the double-height lobby and the first thing that draws the eye is a huge window framing a maple tree and the palace moat beyond. Decor reflects this proximity to nature, from the leafy carpet motifs to the warm woods and earthy palettes, while more than half of the 266 contemporary-luxe rooms and 18 suites have balconies from which to enjoy the green canopy below. Whether you’re here to work or play, expect omotenashi – this is, after all, a wholly Japanese-owned and managed hotel. Locality is reflected in many of the ten restaurants and bars with tempura at Tatsumi, teppanyaki at GO, sushi at Sushi Kanesaka and kaiseki in its main dining room. The seductive Royal Bar – a meticulous restoration of the hotel’s original bar from 1961 - is where Tokyo’s movers and shakers gather after work for one of Manabu Ohtake’s icy martinis.
