The Peninsula Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

When the Peninsula Tokyo opened in 2007, in the heart of Tokyo’s vibrant Yurakucho district, it was the first new-build hotel the city had seen in over a decade. Though many starry establishments have since punctuated the skyline, this OG retains its crown as one of the capital’s glitziest destinations. Much sets it apart, but key to mention is that it is purpose-built, meaning that rather than occupying the top floors of a towering skyscraper, the lobby is on the ground floor, anchoring the hotel’s sense of place. Another highlight is the art collection of more than 1,000 works by 60 artists, including the noteworthy bamboo sculpture Lying Dragon Gate by Keisen Hama which dominates the entrance. This is an innovative hotel that likes to do things differently. For a city where rooms tend to be bijoux, here they are generous in size with even the entry-level rooms complemented by a dressing room, sitting area and memory ensuite. Soft grey, earthy tones, and the wooden and bamboo panelling, are calm and comforting. Do not miss the Espa spa or dining in the 24th floor restaurant with its views of Imperial Palace Gardens and Hibiya Park.
