The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon
Tokyo, Japan
If you want to know where the cool crowd gathers for cocktails in Tokyo, look no further than the terrace of The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon. Designed by hospitality maestro Ian Schrager (of Studio 54 fame) in partnership with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (the man behind the city’s Olympic Stadium), we’d expect nothing less. Together they’ve created a seductive environment across every floor of this sparkling hotel, which is in the re-energised business district of Toranomon. A lift whooshes guests up the Tokyo World Gate skyscraper to the 31st floor and the jungly reception, where, framed by the 500-plus indoor plants, you catch a glimpse through giant glass windows of the Tokyo Tower and Shiba Park beyond. Designed to appeal to a new generation of urban traveller, the playful design continues across the restaurants and bars. There’s the statement-making Jade Room and Garden Terrace spearheaded by Tom Aikens; the gleaming Gold Bar; and The Blue Room where guests sit on cobalt banquettes for superfood ingredients and Japanese flavours. By contrast, the 206 guest rooms are a vision of greys, taupes and creams, letting the remarkable city vistas do all the talking.
