Amisfield Restaurant

Frankton, New Zealand

This rustic stone and wood building nestles picturesquely within a 200-acre winery just half-an-hour’s-drive from Queenstown. With views over Lake Hayes and a backdrop of snow-capped mountains this really is the full rural experience, but the food can hardly be described as rustic. Homegrown hero Vaughan Mabee cut his teeth under legendary basque chef Martín Berasategu before working at Copenhagen icon, Noma, and his dishes can compete visually with René Redzepi himself. Think of wild fallow deer cooked on an antler or wild mallard feet with a pedicure of perigord black truffle claws. Each one is paired to perfection with wines made from its own vineyard – their pinot noir and aromatic pours such as Riesling and Pinot Gris are particularly strong.
