Sommerro

Oslo, Norway

This cool crowd hangout is an antidote to the virulent march of minimalism across Scandinavia. The 231-room hotel, in the Frogner neighbourhood, is a tale of heritage reborn. The Nordic Choice brand rescued the former headquarters of electrical company Oslo Lysverker and transformed the 1870 building – plus the former public baths next door – into a sumptuous palace of extravagance, packing in seven resturants and bars, a 15,000-square-foot spa, a rooftop pool, a cinema and a theatre behind the 1930s façade. New this year is a private city villa. Whitewashed minimalism doesn’t get a look in: rooms are warmly hued tapestries of Art Deco excellence with plush textiles and folk-inspired motifs. One particularly cosy suite is cocooned by marine-navy walls. The Sommerro Negroni is already a city classic, as is the Nordic-Japanese cuisine coming out of Frida Ronge’s Tak Oslo. Head out to brunch in the city, and you’ll be making tracks to Ekspedisjonshallen (try saying that a few glasses from the Barramon pintoz and wine bar). Meanwhile a painstaking restoration of the old public baths has created the biggest urban wellness retreat in the Nordic region: a retro-infused basement-to-rooftop retreat with sauna, gym, pool, treatment centres and more.
