Mandarin Oriental Doha
Doha, Qatar
A decade in the making, Mandarin Oriental, Doha finally opened in 2019 in Msheireb Downtown Doha, a complex of museums, shops, mosques and cultural institutions that has become the beating heart of the Qatari capital. It was worth the wait. The hotel is the centrepiece of Al Baraha Square, with architects John McAslan + Partners creating a building that takes its cues from traditional Qatari architecture, alleyways and courtyards – but with a modernist, bioclimatic spin. Interiors are by David Collins Studio, fusing MO’s signature Asian chic with a Middle Eastern narrative. The 117 generously sized guest rooms and 41 suites are pared back but beautifully-appointed. Vying for attention with the sprawling white marble spa, the two rooftop pools are framed by cabanas inviting you to lie back and soak up the Arabian Gulf views. The hotel is home to a couple of the city’s most popular see-and-be-seen hotspots – modern Levantine-Mediterranean eatery Izu and the Cantonese restaurant Liang. The gelato cafe is sweet relief from the heat of the day. Walk it off afterwards on the 15-minute stroll to the vibrant, labyrinthine Souq Waqif.
