It might seem a little surprising to find a well-respected seafood restaurant in the heart of the Julian Alps – but you have to bear in mind that Slovenia is under 250km from one side to the other as the crow flies, and Kobarid is less than two hours from the coast. Topli Val has been serving impeccable seafood from the Slovenian Adriatic for around 45 years, with three generations of the Hvala family now involved in running the restaurant. Seafood is sourced from local fishermen around Savudrija, trout from a local farm in Kobarid, while game (it’s not only seafood on the menu here) is supplied by local hunters, and cheeses and charcuterie by nearby farmers. Standout dishes include the fish carpaccio. The restaurant is part of Hotel Hvala, which is right next door and has comfortable, well-priced rooms.
