Concealed behind a freezer door at the back of a pastrami shop, Paradiso beckons serious cocktail aficionados in Barcelona’s trendy El Born barrio – it shot up The World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2019. After, perhaps, devouring an artisan pastrami and smoked cheese sandwich, guests pass through a curtain into a narrow, wood-panelled bar packed with smiling faces and a DJ on the decks. Imaginative mixology includes the likes of the ‘Great Gatsby’ – a very modern Old Fashioned, containing whisky, white truffle honey, amaro and lavender essence, dramatically served under a smoked cloche. The inner sanctum? A tiny speakeasy-within-a-speakeasy accessed via the bathroom mirror. Shhh.
