Jondal
Ibiza, Spain
Bookended by towering pines and rugged cliffs, Cala Jondal is one of Ibiza’s most beautiful beaches, making it the ideal base for this summer-season-only chiringuito. But, while it might look casual – a spread of simple wooden table and chairs overlooking the azure-blue sea, cream canvas sails overhead to provide shade – with Seville-born star chef Rafael Zafra (ex-El Bulli) at the helm, the food is anything but your typical beach-bar fare. A master of technique, Zafra has designed a menu of crowd-pleasers that appeal as much to the yachting crowd as they do to the island’s beautiful young things, spanning cigalas al ajillo (garlicky pan-fried langoustine) to knockout lobster so meaty you’ll want to wait a few hours before swimming after devouring it. For a less formal taste of the Zafra magic, there’s the Jondal kiosk out front, which does a roaring trade in patatas fritas and ice creams at pocket-money prices.
