Villa Frantzén

Bangkok, Thailand

Following a flurry of French expats and a handful of European kitchens, Bangkok’s Yen Akat became a neighbourhood worth knowing about for its food and wine, and a handful of elegant openings in the past few years has cemented its place on the city’s culinary map. Set in a private house, Villa Frantzén is designed to feel more like an elegant dining room than a restaurant with a serene space informed by Scandi design. Neat rows of pickles and preserves line the shelves, while clever lighting evokes the warmth of candlelight. Tables are centred around the open-plan kitchen and dining is fine but not formal. A six-course menu sees Michelin-star-chef Björn Frantzén (whose Stockholm restaurant Frantzén ranked sixth in the World’s 50 Best) elevate signature Swedish dishes with Asian ingredients: grilled scallops and fermented parsnips are marinated in Japanese dashi and chawanmushi is served with lobster and ikura (red caviar). A sommelier-selected wine – and occasional sake – pairing rounds off the seafood-heavy menu with a strong focus on low-intervention bottles and well-aged wine. Feel like a nightcap? Whisky fans will want to cast their eye over the spirits trolley.
