Le Golfe

Tunis, Tunisia

The golden sands of La Marsa’s beach are book-ended by two beloved landmarks: Kobbet El Haoua - a beautiful abandoned building, once a holiday home - to the south and Le Golfe, a long-standing local establishment. The latter is an olive tree-lined Mediterranean restaurant that’s been dishing up seafood – and ‘Grandma’s risotto’ – since 1955 and has become something of an institution for its unrivalled position overlooking the ocean. Presentation is simple, allowing boat-fresh ingredients like octopus carpaccio, grilled sardines in lime or cuttlefish with candied lemon and capers to take the spotlight. Unhurried service sets the laidback pace: try a bottle of Tunisian wine (ask for extra ice) and settle in for a long lunch that could easily turn into an early dinner and a round or two of figstar martinis.
