Restaurant Hjem

Hexham, UK

Pronounced ‘yem’, ‘hjem’ is both the Northumbrian and Scandinavian word for ‘home’, reflecting not only the ancient links over the North Sea between North East England and the Nordic countries but the heritage of Swedish chef Alex Nietosvuori and his English partner, Ally Thompson, who grew up down the road from the village of Wall where, surprise surprise, Hadrian’s Wall passes nearby. ‘Hjem’ also expresses the approach in the open kitchen of treating local produce to Scandinavian cooking technique; the couple spent 20 years working in the likes of Bror, Fäviken, Frantzen and Maaemo. Wines take a low-intervention, often biodynamic approach, allergies and dietaries can be accommodated with advance notice and vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian menus produced on request: typical of the welcoming approach of a restaurant housed in a village pub with beautiful views over the Tyne Valley.
