Rosewood London

London, UK

Rosewood have chosen a Best-of-British building to house the hotel brand’s first London property. Tucked behind scrolled iron gates, the grandiose, pillared façade of the hotel’s Edwardian-era home could be a country house sequestered away in the green and pleasant hills: instead, it is located in London’s bustling heart. Unexpectedly for such an ornate property, Rosewood London has taken a fork in the road when picking interiors. While communal spaces nod to the building’s history – with marble and mahogany in excess – bedrooms and suites are more pared back. Humbug-striped carpets, cloud-like king-sized beds and a non-confrontational colour palette of stone and taupe add a little edge to an otherwise stately offering. Bathrooms revert to tradition: they’re mirrored and marbled with walk-in showers and sunken tubs. Downstairs, dining takes on different dimensions in three restaurants and bars – including The World's 50 Best Bars newcomer Scarfes – that celebrate British exceptionalism. If you only dine once, make your main course a best-you’ll-ever-eat, streetside pie. Visible behind glass to the ever-moving stream of commuters, the gleaming, Willy Wonk-esque Pie Room kitchen passes quintessential pastry concoctions out of a hatch to time-strapped Londoners. The culinary team's art-like creations are on the menu at the hotel’s Holborn Dining Room, too.
