Housed within a European-style stucco building designed by San Francisco architect Albert Farr, the peaceful 20-room L’Auberge blends vintage flourishes (think antique doorknobs, travertine tiles, four-poster canopied beds, and French windows) with modern comforts, such as updated flat-panel TVs, underfloor heating, and custom fabrics chosen by San Francisco designer Helga Horner. While a spread of boutiques, galleries and restaurants are within walking distance, it’s one of the only full-service hotels in the area with valet parking and in-room dining. The jewel in its crown is award-winning restaurant Aubergine, where chef Justin Cogley (who worked under famed Chicago chef Charlie Trotter) and pastry chef Yulanda Santos artfully conduct tasting menus centred around the season’s best cuisine. With only nine tables, and a wine cellar with a rotating selection of up to 3,500 bottles, Aubergine offers a deliciously intimate experience.
