Chateau Marmont

Los Angeles, US

Few hotels can instantly evoke a mood the way the Chateau Marmont in Los Angelse can. Even among those who’ve never stayed there, the Marmont has become a byword for discretion. Built in the 1920s and loosely modelled on a Loire Valley castle, for almost a century this Sunset Strip hotel has been where Hollywood’s A-list goes for a good time that won’t make the papers. It’s a reputation bolstered by the dark and moody bar, guests-only pool, zipped-lipped staff and strict no-photos policy – unless it’s an officially sanctioned photo shoot, of which there have been hundreds. There are 63 bedrooms, suites, cottages and bungalows, either poolside or hillside – spring for one of these for a true Marmont experience. While there have been some gentle renovations, much of the hotel is exactly as it was when it opened, which is all part of the charm. There’s 24-hour room service for those who don’t want to be seen, a la Greta Garbo in the 1950s, but the palm-covered courtyard tables are where the wheelers and dealers and their eavesdroppers love to eat, drink and do their deals.
