Paradise Lost
New York, US
At first glance, Paradise Lost looks like your typical tropical bar, but on closer examination, the raucous East Village spot is taking a bold approach to subvert the genre with a slightly more sinister theme. Named after the famous John Milton poem of the same title, the menu features plenty of the requisite classics – piña coladas, mai tais etc – but that’s largely where the comparisons to traditional tiki end. Self-described as a “tropical hellscape,” the bombastic bar has all the trappings of a tropical party hosted by Beezelebub himself. Decorated with nods to the underworld in every corner (think lots of taxidermy) and cocktails served in demon-inspired mugs, punctuated with a soundtrack of raucous surf punk, the otherworldly place is a thoroughly original and refreshingly irreverent take on the storied genre.
