Setting aside the anime projected on the walls of its front-room, this petite space feels as authentically Philly as it gets, with a long antique bar, globe lights and tin ceilings. The food is classically casual Japanese pub fare done right, with edamame, gyoza, udon, karaage, buns and a la carte sashimi and sushi rolls on offer together with sake, wine, beer, and cocktails (alcoholic and otherwise). In contrast, the omakase at the intimate high-end sushi bar in the back is the pro move for a special night out. Each bite is lovingly assembled by chef and owner Jesse Ito, who started working at the family restaurant at the age of 14. Most clientele at Royal Sushi are locals and regulars, forging a warm and familiar atmosphere that you feel on arrival. No reservations.
