San Ysidro Ranch
Santa Barbara, US
Nestled in the Montecito foothills, San Ysidro traces its origins to a 1769 land grant from King Charles III of Spain. In the ensuing centuries, the sun-soaked slope evolved into a premier resort. John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned in one of the 38 cottages; Vivien Leigh and Sir Lawrence Olivier were married on the lawn; and Winston Churchill retreated to this Santa Barbara haven for a winter. Privacy is treasured by the high profile guests, accordingly the individual residences are spread across the 550 acre grounds. The vine-covered cottages are decorated in an old world, country home aesthetic with plenty of floral touches. Persian rugs, four-poster beds and fireplaces warm up the rooms while the terraces feature outdoor showers. The property also offers trails through acres of dreamy, California landscaping, a spa and salon, and a storybook pool. The surrounding wine country is equally gorgeous and the concierges are skilled at arranging excursions. In the evenings, there’s plenty of opportunity to taste more wine at Stonehouse. One of three onsite restaurants, the indoor/outdoor restaurant serves elevated riffs on coastal comfort fare. The 14,000-bottle cellar includes a full vertical of Chateau Petrus from 1945 until present.
