Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
Waimea, US
Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is carved into the caramel beaches of Kauna’oa Bay on the northern Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. Opened in 1965, it was the first resort hotel to open on the island, developed by Laurance S. Rockefeller, and it remains one of the best thanks to its wraparound ocean views, ample onsite activities, and warm Hawaiian hospitality. With its Mid-century design impeccably preserved, the Beachfront Wing rooms all have a furnished lanai (an open-sided patio) and ocean views, while dining options range from an all-day market to upscale dining, all with a focus on local cuisine. On Tuesdays and Fridays, a traditional luau welcomes guests to enjoy roast pig and island fish while watching hula and fire dancing. Golf is also a draw, with two 18-hole championship courses on site – one dating back to 1964, constructed on a previous lava field – but adventurous guests can set off on snorkelling and canoe excursions, helicopter tours, and stargazing hikes.
