The Green Zone

Washington DC, US

After operating as a pop-up bar for four years prior, owner Chris Hassaan Francke opened The Green Zone in its current location in the Adams Morgan district in 2018. Named after the heavily-guarded safe international zone in Baghdad, the two-story Middle Eastern cocktail bar is a humble place that welcomes guests from all communities to celebrate the vibrant flavours of Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and beyond (think pomegranate, apricot, tea, pistachio, arak and more) through both food and drink. Some house signatures, like the Janissary Corps (gin, pistachio, lemon, and 'silky magic') are always on the menu, while others rotate seasonally. There's plenty of Johnny Walker on site – which Francke calls "the second currency of the Middle East" – and an alcohol-free selection is available for those who don't drink.
