What kind of place do bartenders go to when they’re off duty? All signs point to the Alley, which is ironic – this bustling New York-style joint has all the hallmarks of a speakeasy. The small, split-level space (found down an alleyway) draws a youthful, urbicolous crowd for its exemplary drinks and cool styling – all raw industrial walls, metal wheels reclaimed as lights and walls covered in mismatched frames of musical icons. Minh Tan Pham is the brain behind it; wander down the iron stairs to bar level and you’ll find him and his team holding court amid swizzles and shakes. As well as a solid spirit collection that leans heavily on the whisky, craft cocktails take their cue from Pham’s heritage and regional ingredients. You’ll find the dried-banana-infused bourbon, banana syrup, lime and ginger bitters of the Mekong Delta makes a decadent pick. Tempting small plates, live music and DJ sessions are extras.
