A family business: When Count Antonio Bolza first saw the rolling 3,500 acres of the Reschio estate between Tuscany and Umbria in 1984, he was compelled to move there and start a life-changing project to bring the estate back to its former glory. With the help of his son Benedikt, a highly talented architect, they began to renovate and sell the ruined farmhouses before opening Castello di Reschio, restoring the former family villa within the medieval castle’s walls in the process.
Who comes here? Thanks to its private villas and 36 charming suites, which allow guests to unplug, unwind and immerse themselves in Umbria’s natural surroundings, Reschio is the go-to getaway for celebrities, CEOs and VIPs in search of a peaceful retreat far from the madding crowds of the Amalfi Coast.
Who’s behind the design? The Castello di Reschio estate is the brainchild of Count Benedikt Bolza and his wife Donna Nencia Corsini, who have overseen every detail of the suites, from the extravagant furnishings to textiles and homeware, finding antiques and designing elegant tailor-made furniture with a vintage touch.
A sensory journey: The Bathhouse is a unique wellness space suspended in time, with its original stone walls decorated with oil paintings. Here guests can relax in privacy for up to four hours at a time, enjoying spa treatments in front of a roaring fire before bathing in bathtubs covered with linen sheets.
Dinner with a view: Two panoramic restaurants use the best local produce to take guests on an immersive journey into Italian cuisine while enjoying breathtaking views of the undulating Umbrian hills. Ristorante alle Scuderie is the more informal of the two, offering a selection of traditional pasta, cold cuts and pizzas. Ristorante al Castello, meanwhile, serves breakfast on its charming, sun-soaked terrace and fine-dining local specialities in the evening.
What else is on the menu? Home to the best dressage purebred Spanish horses, the hotel’s Equestrian Centre offers special trips on horseback guided by master trainer Antonello Radicchi. During the summer, the Equestrian Theatre also hosts open-air film nights, where Italian cinema greats dominate, naturally.
