The Tasman

Hobart

Three distinct architectural eras cleverly melded into one seamless, luxurious whole

Give me the lowdown: The only Australian outpost of Marriot’s Luxury Collection brand, The Tasman is a magical jigsaw puzzle of a hotel crafted from three buildings, cleverly and seamlessly blending Georgian, Art Deco and modern architectural styles. Each of the buildings’ distinct eras are reflected in The Tasman’s 152 rooms and suites – from dark and moody high-ceilinged rooms complete with working fireplaces to glam Art Deco curves and light-filled angular glass and steel boxes with spectacular views over Sullivans Cove. What binds this eccentric collection of styles together is an uncompromising attention to detail, a sense of relaxed luxury and a uniquely Tasmanian style and pace.

What’s the vibe? Hobart has a strong sense of history, culture and close proximity to some of the world’s most beautiful and untouched nature, all of which is reflected at The Tasman. It’s an inarguably luxurious hotel, its well-upholstered public and private spaces decked out with impressive lighting, excellent art and craft from local makers adorning rooms and corridors, minibars stocked with Tasmanian wine, spirits and snacks and bathrooms of the oversized, marble variety. But, being a hotel surrounded by wilderness in a city at the edge of the world, you’re equally likely to see guests decked out in puffer jackets, hiking boots and backpacks ready for a day’s adventuring as in heels and suits heading out for cocktails and dinner.

Eating and drinking: Signature restaurant Peppina is one of the best restaurants in Tasmania. A large, atmospheric Italian restaurant, it has an open kitchen and skylights that make it possible for rows of olive trees in raised planters to thrive beside your table. Chef Massimo Mele is a man fanatical about both Tasmanian produce – from heirloom fruit and vegetables to some of the best seafood in Australia – and traditional Italian cooking, making Peppina as popular with locals as it is with hotel guests. There’s a brilliant wine list too that emphasises the increasingly renowned Tasmanian wine industry while Mary Mary, the hotel’s glamorous cocktail bar, features output from the island state’s thriving distillery culture.

Location. Location. Location: The Tasman is located in Hobart’s historic, leafy, sandstone-coloured parliament precinct just a short stroll from the waterfront and minutes from the dedicated ferry to MONA, the often controversial and architecturally impressive Museum of Old and New Art. However, in a city the size of Hobart, most things are just a short stroll away, from its famed fresh food markets to the bars, cafes and restaurants that have given the city’s food culture a reputation for punching way above its weight.
