Tokyo
The guest experience at Virtù, the 39th-floor bar at the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, is truly seamless. From greeting to goodbye, the flow of service is so smooth that you never have to wave for attention or nurse an empty glass, which is partly how the team earned the 2024 Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award. And with nine languages between them, there’s a decent chance they can serve you in your native tongue.
Billed as a cocktail bar and cognac lounge, the mixed drinks feature plenty of lesser-known Japanese brews and spirits, from sake to shochu to retro liqueurs, and the map on the menu tells you exactly where they originated. Cocktail highlights include an indulgent fig and cognac after-dinner sipper and the smoky ume old fashioned. The cognac collection includes Japan’s only Rémy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask bottle, a pour of which is yours for a cool 900,000 yen (£4,500).
Near the entrance is an aging room crammed with jars of house-made umeshu (plum wine), the latest of which is an opulent version with chartreuse as the base. The bar décor is unsurprisingly all about luxury, with plush sofas, glittering art deco fittings and a high-rise view of the world’s most populous metropolis.
