Tlecān

Mexico City

New Entry

Found right where the mezcalería scene flourished at the beginning of the 21st century, Tlecān (the Náhuatl word for 'place of fire') has developed a totally new way of understanding mezcal. Paying homage to Prehispanic culture — the iconic Disc of the Death clay sculpture is hung as a witness overlooking the interior of the bar — Tlecān offers a diverse selection of artisanal agave distillates from small producers sourced across Mexico. Former Pujol’s beverage director Eli Martínez has crafted a drinks menu that allows you to dive deeply into the soul of agave. You can try their rare offerings neat or sip them mixed into simple yet profound cocktails like the Paloma Blanca (carbonated clarified grapefruit juice, mezcal, lime, and grapefruit salt) or the Tascalate Sour, inspired by an ancient Mexican drink made of cacao, achiote and corn from the state of Chiapas.

While Mexico City’s cocktail bar landscape moves towards a more cosmopolitan vision, Tlecān instead choses to focus on showcasing Mexican archetypes with pride and a true passion for service and is duly recognised for doing so.
