Qu Lang Yuan
Beijing, China
Tucked away in Beijing’s Dongcheng distric, French-Chinese hotspot Qu Lang Yuan enjoyed an extensive facelift in early 2024, transforming the restaurant into a sultry, sleek and minimal space: a dark wood-clad bar separates the kitchen from front of house, while the central countertop delivers a beautiful, nature-themed centrepiece of black, rough-hewn stones interspersed with delicate, thriving foliage. This same meticulous detail has gone into the food: chef Li Zhanxu trained in France (working at Restaurant Alain Ducasse at the Hotel Plaza Athénée) before returning to China, and she pours her training into elevated, homespun Chinese dishes: case in point, her steamed bread dish riffs on the Western bread basket, which offers up an eastern spin with smoked butter, watermelon soy sauce and mugwort condiments to pair.
