La Brasserie Georges
Lyon, France
Bonne Biere et Bonne Chere depuis 1836', or 'Good Beer and Good Cheer since 1836', is the motto of La Brasserie Georges, a true institution in France’s gastronomic capital of Lyon. And whilst clients drop by for both, the restaurant also boats a distinct 1925 Art Deco style, comlete with all-marble dining room, geometric tiled flooring and historic chandeliers, which help pull guests through the doors. The likes of Edith Piaf, Ernest Hemingway and Jules Verne have all dined here over the decades, with the roll call of celebrities commemorated with copper plates on the seats. On the menu, expect French classics such as onion soup, chitterling sausage and steak tartare prepared tableside, but the most famous dish is the brasserie’s sauerkraut, which has been served since the 1836 opening. It even got La Brasserie Georges into the record books at one point when the culinary team produced the largest sauerkraut in the world. Follow it up with the signature enormous Baked Alaska, made even bigger in 1996 when a team of 20 baked a 34m long version, making it another record breaker for the venerable restaurant.
