This Jakarta cocktail bar’s name makes more sense when you know that haus is Indonesian for thirst. Created by Mirwansyah Bule and The Union Group, the team behind Jakarta’s critically-acclaimed The Cocktail Club, and located above French restaurant Bouchon, Modernhaus combines a mid-century aesthetic with unmistakably contemporary cocktails. More like a living room than a bar, the layout here maintains no separation between bartender and guest, with the option to get involved at the central communal table or cosy up in one of the more seculded spaces around the room. The cocktail list is packed with info, from detailed ingredients to the broad style of each drink, allowing guests to dive in as much or as little as they please. Bar snacks are well covered too, with options ranging from crispy cheese puffs to roast chicken served with butter rice and foie gras.
