Villa Treville
Positano, Italy
As the former home of famed Italian opera and film director Franco Zeffirelli, Treville Positano oozes old school cinematic glamour. Coco Chanel, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are some of the starry names to have stepped through the doors, and Maria Callas and Leonard Bernstein even have suites named after them. Just 16 rooms amongst two hectares of lush gardens means there’s plenty of privacy, one of the reasons so many celebrities have retreated here, and each comes dressed in a chic, seaside-inspired accents, think white walls, colourful mosaics and azure blue flourishes. Another regular guest is Dr Barbara Sturm, whose cult beauty products are found at La Traviata Spa, which offers a complete wellbeing experience with a gym, a marble-lined Turkish bath and a cold plunge pool, with a sea-view if that helps you stick it out for longer. The sun soaked cliffside organic garden serves not only the Mediterranean Maestro restaurant but also Bianca Bar, which doubles up as a microbrewery, from which herbs and botanicals are transformed into signature cocktails. But the real highlight is On the Rocks, a small private terrace carved into the rocky bluff, offering endless views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
