Aman Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

Aman’s lush, forested property in Kyoto epitomizes the concept of zen. A sense of calm sets in as guests pass through the 38 hectares of nature surrounding the hotel at the base of the Hidari Daimonji mountains. Arriving at the campus’ heart, Asian minimalist design enhances the sense of serenity. The modern riffs on traditional Japanese elements like latticework and sliding wall panels is the final work of beloved architect Kerry Hill, a longtime Aman collaborator. Hill was inspired by the ryokan, a classic-style Japanese inn. While traditional touches like tatami mats and symmetrical use of blonde woods are common, most guests prefer to sleep in Aman’s signature beds. The 34 rooms and suites also provide all the modern elements and indulgent amenities that are associated with the brand: full room automation, minibars stocked with gratis nonalcoholic beverages and massive plunge baths. The remainder of the grounds offer more opportunities for calm, be it within the manicured gardens or the spa’s onsen, fed by hot springs. Resident monks are even on hand to help. Dining options include perfect kaiseki menus at Taka-An as well as Kyoto cuisine along with some western staples at the Living Room.
