Tempura Matsu

Kyoto, Japan

Established in 1973 by Shunichi Matsuno, Tempura Matsu is now in the capable hands of Matsuno’s son Toshio, whose resume includes stints working with renowned chefs Alain Ducasse and Grant Achatz. Located in the picture-postcard surrounds of Arashiyama, the restaurant – which offers counter seating and private rooms – has developed a world-class reputation for its traditional Japanese cuisine, presented with contemporary artistry. Elaborate tasting menus, served on vividly coloured oribe ceramic crockery, are meticulously created using the finest native ingredients, including Tsuiyama snow crab, line-caught tuna from Aomori and lobster from the Seto Inland Sea.
