Tampopo
Salmiya, Kuwait
It’s all about the ramen at Tampopo, located in the coastal city of Salmiya, a 20-minute drive from Kuwait City. The buzzy, 20-seater dining room – open Tuesday to Saturday – is the place to come for vibrant bowls of chewy noodles conjured up in the open kitchen and served in steaming, 48-hour bone broth packed with meat, family-grown vegetables and egg. The restaurant doesn’t have a takeaway policy, so be prepared to wait. It’s worth it for the likes of the duck ramen special – confit duck in a miso bone broth with vegetables and a generous scattering of spring onions. There are also vegetarian and vegan options, appetisers, including onigiri and bento (on Thursdays) and a small but tempting list of desserts such as crème brûlée and apple pie. Wash it down with a kombucha, Asahi beer or the non-alcoholic Tokyo Mule – a refreshing blend of sparkling ginger and yuzu garnished with cucumber.
