El Soussi

Beirut, Lebanon

El Soussi is one of Beirut's most historic restaurants, having been operated in various guises and locations since 1890 and remaining in the same family ever since. This isn't the place to come if you're after fine dining and white tablecloths, it's a rustic, welcoming experience more akin to visiting somebody's home, and is only open for breakfast and lunch. That breakfast though is one of the city's main tourist attractions for those in the know, having been named one of the best in the world by CNN and commonly known as the finest in Beirut, serving up endless plates and bowls filled with hearty, fragrant dishes like fatteh (fresh pitta with chickpeas and yoghurt), and ful (fava beans, lemon juice, crushed garlic and cumin), served alongside fresh breads, pickles and vegetables
