Tawlet Mar Mikhael

Beirut, Lebanon

When Kamal Mouzawak launched his Beirut farmers’ market in 2004, it was more than just a place to buy fresh produce – it was a rallying cry for Lebanon’s rural heritage, a celebration of tradition, and a chance for local producers to earn a fair wage. Fast-forward, and that seedling of an idea has blossomed into Souk el Tayeb, a socially conscious empire spanning an épicerie, a food festival, guesthouses and its crown jewel: the farmers’ kitchens of Tawlet. The Tawlet Mar Mikhael, opened in 2009, is the original: a soulful, sunlit space where cooks from across Lebanon showcase dishes from their villages. The daily changing open buffet is a feast of regional pride, with chefs sharing stories and recipes like you’re gathered in a Lebanese home rather than a restaurant. On Saturdays, the regular Mar Mikhael team takes over for a spirited brunch, and the vibe spills outside to the Souk el Tayeb farmers’ market next door. A visit here isn’t just a meal; it’s a taste of Lebanon’s beating heart.
