La Cantine Mouton Noir

Marrakech, Morocco

Husband-and-wife team Aniss Meski and Stacy O’Neill bring the joie de vivre of Montreal’s dining scene to the Red City’s streets. Casablanca native Meski spent time in Paris and Quebec before returning to his home country, joined by French-Canadian O’Neill, to open this lively bistro in the up-and-coming Guéliz neighbourhood of Marrakech. To the beat of R&B classics in a tiled, high-vaulted dining room, the duo delivers levelled-up Canadian comfort food to walk-ins only (there’s a no reservations rule). Frites au parmesan and bavette de boeuf join good old-fashioned burgers, chocolate crème brûlées and – in a nod to the home city – sumac-crusted salmon fillets served with a lemony tabbouleh. Any beef on the menu is matured on site and diners can arrange to buy cuts direct from the restaurant. There’s no alcohol, but homemade ginger beer and hibiscus and blueberry iced teas hit the mark. On weekends, the well-priced Black Sheep brunch menu is worth a repeat visit.
