Josun Palace, A Luxury Collection Hotel
Seoul, South Korea
Though relatively new to Seoul’s hotel scene, Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Seoul Gangnam channels mid-century glamour, its richly-layered interiors paying homage to its predecessor The Chosun Hotel, South Korea’s first ever luxury grande dame. The allure of yesteryear is evident from the get-go – the reception areas a vision of marble, brass and glass, with Daniel Arsham’s enormous Blue Calcite Eroded Moses statue taking centre stage. Throughout, architectural studio Humbert & Poyet interweaves Art Deco and east Asian aesthetics, using bold geometric lines – on the ceilings, on the floors, on the walls – and bespoke furniture. Every chair and sofa is as pleasing as the next and do look up, the lights are beautiful. But it’s much more than a pretty face: the 1914 Lounge and Bar, a reference to the Chosun’s opening date, and the sky bar on the 36th floor are on every voguish cocktail drinker’s radar. So too The Great Hong Yuan for its Cantonese fine dining and Eatanic Garden for contemporary Korean. Though Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet have decked out the 254 rooms and suites with a little less gilt, they’re glamorous nonetheless.
