Alkimia

Barcelona, Spain

Head to Alkimia to discover the past and future of Catalan cuisine. A fine-dining restaurant for modern times, you’ll find it in a somewhat tumbledown street, within the renewed, Jean Nouvel-designed centre to gastronomy that was once the Moritz beer factory. Buzz the bell and wait to be ushered through to the stylish dining room – a contemporary, gilded seascape with original features and reclaimed and refined table settings. With a view straight onto the pass you can watch chef Jordi Vilà and his team as they go about reimagining Catalan classics like Xisqueta lamb into modern day epicurean delights. The region’s suquet – a seafood stew – uses half-pickled bonito to lauded effect, while traditional Spanish pastries (orelletes) are served here with chicken. A tasting menu centred on game is available to pre-order during the season, too.
